This resource captivates readers and explains the happenings of the immune system, or "your personal body guard". This activity captivates and simplifies the mysterious world of the immune system by adding some personification to the key players (macrophages, neutrophils, etc.) as if they were in battle.

This sub plan is a useful tool to help encourage scientific literacy in reading, graphing, and making connections to the scientific world.

Here is a snippet of the document for your consideration:

"That’s because most of the time, the neutrophils are dormant. It is indeed the good old macrophage’s cytokines that activate the neutrophils. But the macrophages don’t get scared easily; in fact they can fight an infection alone for days without calling up the killer cells. It has to be a serious fight for the neutrophils to come along. A sure-sign that neutrophils are involved is pus. Pus is actually a clump or cluster of dead neutrophils."

Covers the basics of the immune system and briefly explain what an allergic and allergic reaction are, with a graphing exercise to show allergies on the rise.

Students will gain an appreciation of the human body knowing how much it does without us even knowing. This activity covers the following in a basic manner:

❀ Macrophage
❀ Neutrophil
❀ Helper T Cell
❀ Antigen
❀ Antibody
❀ MHC/cytokines
❀ Histamines
❀ Anaphylactic shock

This does not need to be exclusively used as a sub plan. Many feedback I have received is from teachers who used this in their classrooms as classwork.

As with most of my sub plans, they can easily be reduced should you be short on time or have reluctant readers. You can space this out over two days (see the note included) or completely omit the last two pages.

Feel good knowing that your students will be well taken care of on those days that you are out- don't scramble for another sub plan! You can use this year after year!
