This science sub plan is designed to help students better understand cancer. The reading puts the disease into terms they can comprehend, while remaining at grade level. This sub plan is 5 pages long, with an optional graphing exercise at the end that has easy-to-follow clear directions for making a bar graph and a few additional analysis questions about the results (number of cancer cases vs. number of deaths among 6 types of cancers). This information is relevant and piques student interests.
Should your classes be particularly short or you don't feel comfortable leaving the graphing exercise with a sub depending on the grade level, as with most of my sub plans you can omit the last portion (graphing) to make this sub plan a 3 page literacy activity- but be sure to save the graphing activity for extra practice another day!
This sub plan is a useful tool to help encourage scientific literacy in reading, graphing, and making connections to the scientific world
Feel good knowing that your students will be well taken care of on those days that you are out- don't scramble for another sub plan! You can use this year after year!
Recommended for grades 8+
